Three Ways to Play with Friends

Private rooms. Click Play, choose Challenge a Friend, pick a time control, and send the room link. Your friend opens the link and the game starts immediately. No accounts needed on either side.

Friend challenges. If both of you have accounts and are friends on play4row, you can send a direct challenge from your friends list with one click. Notification fires on their end, they accept, and you are in the game.

Ranked rematches. If you both want the games to count toward your Glicko-2 rating, play a ranked private match. The win or loss updates both ratings, the game appears in your match history, and you can review it move by move afterward.

How to Start a Private Room

Open play4row.com, click Play, then Challenge a Friend. Choose a time control from the list. The system generates a short room code and a shareable URL. Drop the link in iMessage, WhatsApp, Discord, wherever your friend hangs out. They click, they are in, the clock starts when both players are ready.

Want to swap who goes first? Hit rematch — the next game in the same room reverses player colors. Keep playing best-of-five, best-of-seven, or just keep going until someone has to leave.

Time Controls Available

Bullet runs from 0.5+0.5 to 2+1 (the second number is the per-move increment in seconds). For fast pulses without the panic, blitz includes 3+0, 3+2, 5+0, and 5+3. For thinking-friendly games, rapid offers 10+0, 10+5, and 15+10. Each time control has its own rating leaderboard if you play ranked, so you can specialize in the format that fits your style.

Real-Time Chat in Every Game

Every active game has a chat panel next to the board. Messages appear instantly to both players. For longer conversations outside of games, the friends list includes full direct messaging that persists between sessions. Mute or block anyone who gets out of line — both controls are one click from the chat panel.
