Connect 4 — No Download, Just Play

Skip the app store, skip the installer, skip the permissions. play4row runs in the browser tab you already have open. Free, instant, full-featured.

Open and Play

From the moment you click the link, the board loads in under a second on most connections. No setup screen, no tutorial wall.

Cross-Device by Default

Sign in once and your rating, history, and friends follow you between phone, laptop, and tablet. The same URL on every device.

No Permissions to Approve

The browser sandbox handles the security. We do not ask for contacts, location, microphone, or push permissions to play a game.

Why a Browser Game Beats a Native App

The pitch for native apps used to be performance. That argument is dead for games like Connect Four. A modern browser engine renders the board at 60 frames per second on basically any phone made in the last six years, and the AI runs in a background Web Worker so the page stays responsive even mid-search. Whatever advantage a native binary had on a 2012 iPhone is gone.

What you get in exchange is real. There is no "5 MB update" before you can play. There is no app-store approval delay between us shipping a fix and you getting it. There is no platform tax that pushes us toward in-app-purchase mechanics. We push a change to the website and the next time you load the page you have it.

What You Skip vs. an App

The app-store experience is full of paper cuts that do not exist on the web. You skip the sign-up wall before you can see the home screen. You skip the push-notification opt-in dialog. You skip the "Rate us five stars!" pop-up after your second game. You skip the in-app upsell to remove ads. You skip the storage warning when the app balloons to half a gigabyte after six months of updates.

You also skip the privacy permissions a casual game has no business asking for. play4row does not need your contact list to find friends — we have a search box. We do not need location to match you with players — matchmaking pairs by skill. We do not need microphone or camera permissions for anything. The browser sandbox keeps it that way.

What You Still Get

Everything that matters. Real-time multiplayer over WebSockets. Glicko-2 ranked play with a global leaderboard. Private rooms you can share with a code. The AI engine at ten difficulty levels, including a perfect-play setting that consults the full solved game database. Hundreds of curated puzzles. A position analyzer for working through openings and endgames. Game review with move-by-move evaluation that flags blunders.

Sign-in is optional but free. Without it you can play bot games and analyze positions forever. With it, your match history, rating, friends, and puzzle progress sync across every device you log in from. Email and Google sign-in — no other auth providers, nothing exotic.

Performance Notes

The board, animations, sound, and AI all run client-side. The only network traffic during a match is a few hundred bytes per move for the multiplayer sync. That means play4row works on slow WiFi, mobile data, and even shared school networks where bandwidth is throttled. The engine does its alpha-beta search in a Web Worker, so the UI thread is never blocked while the AI thinks — even at maximum difficulty on a phone.

The one thing the browser cannot do is genuine offline play. If you board a flight or go camping, this is not the right tool. For that, a native Connect Four app from your app store is the answer. For everything else — at home, at school, at work, on your phone, on your laptop — the browser is faster to start, lighter to run, and easier to keep current.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I really not need to install anything?

Right. play4row runs in any modern browser — Chrome, Safari, Firefox, Edge. Open the URL and the board is there. No app store, no APK, no installer.

Will my game history sync across devices?

Yes, if you sign in with a free account. Your rating, match history, puzzle progress, and friends list are stored server-side and follow you between phone, tablet, and desktop. Without an account you can still play casual and bot games.

Does the browser version have all the features?

Yes. Multiplayer matchmaking, ranked play, the AI engine, puzzles, the analyze board, friend challenges, chat, and game review are all available in the browser. There is no premium tier hiding features behind an app.

Is the AI fast in the browser?

Very. The engine runs in a Web Worker so it does not freeze the page while it thinks. At top difficulty it consults a precomputed solution database, so move responses are near-instant even on phones.

When would I want a native app instead?

Mostly for offline play, which we do not support. If you have spotty WiFi, the browser site still works on slow connections — Connect Four moves are tiny network payloads — but if you genuinely need a no-internet-required board, a native app is the only option.
