Why Online Multiplayer Is Better for Skill Growth

Playing the same friend over and over teaches you their habits, but it does not teach you Connect 4. To improve, you need a steady stream of opponents at and slightly above your level — which is exactly what ranked online matchmaking provides.

How to Start Each Mode

For online 2-player, head to the play with friends page for the full setup. Short version: click Play, choose Challenge a Friend, pick time control, share the link. Your friend opens it and the clock starts.

For same-screen 2-player, see the same-screen page for the current best workflow. play4row does not have a dedicated pass-and-play mode yet — the workaround uses the engine page with both players taking turns picking moves on one device, which works well enough that most people do not notice the difference.

Time Controls for 2-Player

Bullet (0.5+0.5 to 2+1) for quick rounds. Blitz (3+0, 3+2, 5+0, 5+3) for the standard competitive feel. Rapid (10+0, 10+5, 15+10) when you want to actually think before each move. Pick whatever matches your patience and your opponent's. For a casual evening with a friend, 5+3 is usually the sweet spot — long enough to plan, short enough to play many games.
